The goal of the project titled "Annual (2021-2022) reed (habitat type 72A0) management measure implementation services in the Special Area of Conservation-Special Protection Area - Limni Stymfalia (code: GR 2530002)" was the management of reed in lake Stymfalia, as as a means of maintaining the biodiversity of the protected area.
The management of reed by cutting serves to increase the mosaic nature of the lake's ecosystem, while at the same time, by removing quantities of biomass, the factors that create eutrophication conditions are reduced.
The project was a continuation of the work of the implemented Life-Stymfalia program "Sustainable Management and Financing of Wetland Biodiversity: The case of Lake Stymfalia" and was distinguished in the following stages:
- Initial ornithilogical report
- Reed cutting operations
- Monitoring and evaluation of management effectiveness
The cutting operations were carried out between September and October 2022, within a reed area of approximately 10 hectares. The biomass resulting from the cut reeds was then collected and transported to a designated plot of land near the lake.
The use of the agricultural tractor with a cutting attachment on a dry substrate was particularly effective
Cut reed beds, once inundated, are expected to provide suitable foraging areas for the lake's aquatic birds.
