A large-scale interpretation project concerning the creation of an integrated environmental interpretation system in the areas of responsibility of the The Management Body of the Evros Delta and Samothraki Protected Areas. The Management Body has now been abolished and integrated as the Management Unit of Evros Delta and Dadia National Parks, in the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (N.E.C.C.A). The project includes eight (8) sections:
- Upgrading the exhibition space of the Delta Evros Information Center in Traianoupoli
- Configuration of the external space of the Delta Evros Information Center in Traianoupoli
- Production of an environmental interpretation touring exhibition
- Production of an interpretation system for the Evros Delta observatories (locations: Antheia, Drana, Paloukia)
- Organization of environmental interpretation routes in the area of Avantas, Alexandroupoli
- Organization of climbing fields in Avantas
- App development for "smart devices", with the use of BLE technology (Bluetooth Low Energy)
- Development of a multilingual website promoting ecotourism activities
Through the above actions, the project aims to raise the awareness of the citizens and visitors of the area for the protection of the natural environment and the Natura 2000 Network, to upgrade the services provided for residents and visitors and to increase traffic. In addition, it aims to include sensitive groups in the informational process, creating the appropriate infrastructure and providing the possibility of remote informing, utilizing new technologies.
The project focuses on the Evros Delta, with the main axis of interpretation being the "power" of water, based on which a diverse environment has been created that has favored the development of biodiversity in the area, as well as in the region of Avantas, where climbing fields and interpretation routes of cultural and environmental interest will be organized.
Evros Delta
The Evros Delta is the southern end of the second largest river in Eastern Europe, the Evros river. In 1974, the Evros Delta was recognized as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, while in 2007 it was also designated as a National Park. It is a recognized area at European level and is included in the areas of the Natura 2000 Network (in application of the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) and the Birds Directive (2009/147/EC) with the codes: GR1110007 "Evros Delta and western arm" (Special Areas of Conservation) and GR1110006 "Delta Evrou" (Special Protection Area).
Avantas
The wider area of Avantas stands out for its climbing fields and natural environment. In the area surrounding the lowland village of Avantas, visitors have the opportunity to walk past the area's castles, visit churches, archaeological sites, waterfalls and climbing fields. The area belongs to the European Natura 2000 Network named "Notio Dasiko Symplegma Evrou" (code: GR1110009) and is a Special Protection Area (SPA) protected for the presence of important bird species, such as the cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus) or the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus).
Samothraki
With unique natural landscapes and cultural identity, the island of Samothraki offers many possibilities for recreation and exploration. One can see the Martini Forest with its century-old oaks, as well as the temple complex of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, where religious activity lasted until the 4th century AD. The biodiversity of the island is rich, especially the avifauna with at least 150 species, including the Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae) and waterbirds such as the black stork (Ciconia nigra). The island is characterized by the protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network named "Samothraki: Oros Fengari kai Paraktia Zoni" (Special Protection Area with the code: GR1110012) and "Fengari Samothrakis, Anatolikes Aktes, Vrachonissida Zourafa kai Thalassia Zoni" (Special Area of Conservation with the code: GR1110004).
The interpretation system will, among other things, have a common aesthetic and perception, will serve the needs for information and awareness, will promote the purposes of protection and management as well as the work of the Management Unit.
The implementation of the project is being undertaken by the association of companies: "OikoM Ltd. - TETRAGON S.A.".
