The Samaria National Park is world-renowned for its environmental and aesthetic value. It is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and has received the European Diploma of Protected Areas by the Council of Europe. The Samaria National Park Management Body, aiming to improve and modernize the visitors’ experience, has assigned OikoM Ltd. the development of an outdoor augmented interpretation system for the environment using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology.

The project implementation will involve fieldwork and visits to the predetermined paths, in cooperation with the Samaria National Park Management Body. A total of seven (7) paths will be designed and for each, mapping, collection of photographic material and installation of Bluetooth emitters will take place.

The project tasks are divided into two sections:

  • Designing and installing reception signs.
  • Designing a digital application for Android and iOS smart device functional systems, based on Bluetooth Low Energy emitters (Beacons) and installation of the necessary emitters.

The development of an interpretation system for the environment, apart from the direct benefits to the visitors, which will receive guided information in parallel with their overall experience and development of critical thought, will also create an innovative environmental information system on a significant scale.
