“The members of the Study Team requested an introductory meeting with officials of the Region to update on the basic implementation framework of the study, and to establish a cooperation framework including data recording, opinions and organization of communication and consultation throughout its implementation. The meeting was organized by the Vice-Chancellor of Environment and Spatial Planning, Nikos Kalogeris.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that «the completion of the Special Environmental Studies and Management plans of the protected areas is an established position of the Region as reflected in the recent Regional Spatial Planning Framework of Crete. We will work with the contractor for a comprehensive result aimed at protecting the natural environment and biodiversity of our island. The protected areas that make up about 35% of our region are sustainable development tools for Crete and we must manage them properly so that they continue to play a role for generations to come without deterioration and degradation due to pressures and over-exploitation by some».
