The projects titled “Services for the implementation of annual (2022, 2023 and 2024-2025) reed management measures (habitat type 72A0) in SCI-SPA – Limni Stymfalia (code: GR 2530002)” aimed to manage the reedbed in Lake Stymfalia, as a means to preserve the biodiversity of the protected area.

The management of reedbeds by cutting serves to increase the mosaicity of the lake’s ecosystem, while at the same time, by removing quantities of biomass, the factors that create eutrophication conditions are reduced.

The projects were a continuation of the work of the implemented Life-Stymfalia program “Sustainable Management and Financing of Wetland Biodiversity: The case of Lake Stymfalia” and were distinguished in the following stages:

  • Initial avifauna report
  • Reed cutting operations
  • Monitoring and evaluation of management effectiveness

The cutting operations for the projects in 2022 and 2023 took place during the periods of September–October 2022 and September–October 2023, in a total of approximately 10 and 12 hectares of reeds, respectively. Subsequently, the biomass resulting from the reed cutting was collected and transported to a designated plot near the lake.

The project for the 2024–2025 period included both summer and winter cutting, targeting the cutting of approximately 30 hectares of reeds. The summer cutting was carried out between September and October 2024, while the winter cutting took place from January to March 2025.
