WWF Hellas, drawing valuable conclusions from the design, establishment, and day-to-day management of the Gyaros MPA during the period from 2013 to 2024, aims to contribute to the broader national effort to achieve the creation of a coherent network of effectively managed MPAs across the country, compiling lessons learned and best practices from its activities during that period, in order to support and enhance the appropriate management of existing MPAs as well as to inspire those new MPAs that may be established in the future at the national level.

In this context, WWF Hellas commissioned OikoM Ltd. to organize, design, and produce two distinct guides that reflect the conclusions and best practices derived from its experience and decade-long engagement in the wider Gyaros area:

  • Design and implementation of surveillance and guarding systems for MPAs
  • Participatory procedures for the design, establishment and management of MPAs

The development of these two e-Guides was carried out within the framework of the project “Development of Good Practice Guides based on the experience of the establishment and management of the Gyaros MPA”, which is part of the program “Mainstreaming Best Practices and Lessons Learned from the Gyaros MPA work within the national MPA System of Greece”, implemented by WWF Hellas. This program is supported by the Monk Seal Alliance.
