The aim of the project is the design of specialized measures, actions and practices for the study areas that will contribute to the protection and conservation of the protected elements of the natural environment from overgrazing and to the promotion of sustainable management actions for animal husbandry.
The study areas are the following:
- “Fengari Samothrakis, Anatolikes Aktes, Vrachonissida Zourafa kai Thalassia Zoni” (Special Area of Conservation – GR1110004)
- “Samothraki: Oros Fengari kai Paraktia Zoni” (Special Protection Area – GR1110012)
The objects of the project are:
i) the assessment of the current state of critical habitats in the protected areas of Samothrace from overgrazing,
ii) the development of pasture use and suitability models using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) combined with field work,
iii) the production of thematic suitability maps and decision maps,
iv) the formulation of a grid of management proposals and protection and conservation measures for the important habitat types and the important habitats for the trigger species of the Special Protection Area,
v) the planning and implementation of consultation activities with stakeholders and the establishment of a system of cooperation and participatory procedures with public bodies and services.
Based on the above framework, the project gives certain directions in order to upgrade and improve the degree of conservation of the species and habitat types of the Natura 2000 sites that are under the management of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (N.E.C.C.A.) – Management Unit of Evros Delta and Dadia National Parks.
The project was assigned to OikoM Ltd by the Management Body of Evros Delta and Samothraki Protected Areas (currently the Management Unit of the Evros Delta and Dadia National Parks of N.E.C.C.A.).
