OikoM participated in the project “Carrying capacity and directions for the promotion and management of visitors in the protected area of the Straits of Acheron” assigned by the Management Body of Kalamas-Acheron-Corfu to the Goulandris Natural History Museum – Greek Biotope/Wetland Centre, in the framework of the Act “Actions for the management and promotion of the protected areas of Acheron and Kalamas” of the Operational Program “EPIRUS 2014-2020”.
The project was carried out in two phases. OikoM’s contribution to the project included:
- during the first phase, the identification of the zones where individual tourist activities are carried out, the estimation of the movement of visitors in the study area and the determination of the pressures from the exercise of the tourist activities, as well as drafting of the Stakeholder Management Plan
- during the second phase, the assessment of the carrying capacity, the identification of the necessary directions for the management of the visitors and the formulation of proposals for the promotion of sustainable tourism in the Straits of Acheron and the wider area
The ultimate goal of the project was to maximize the benefits for the local community and the economy from the development of sustainable tourism, while ensuring the protection and conservation of the region’s valuable biodiversity. The project team was active in the area throughout the project, taking the necessary actions in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic.
